Julie and I went to see Tom Urie in Meet Me At The Knob at Oran Mor. He was, as always, amazing.
The play is based in the days when homosexual acts were punishable by jail time and had a stigma that often resulted in suicide.
It takes place in a dingy hotel room. A pillar of the establishment has arranged (anonymously, he thinks) to meet, and violently abuse, another man. But, it's a set-up. Just when he thinks all his nightmares have come true, it takes a turn for the worse!
From a writing point of view - it's an emotive subject, it's a location where none of them really want to be, but they can't safely leave. So they have to talk it out.
The dialogue is the telling of their stories and the unfolding of the plot-twists. Each of them brings a back-story and expectations to the mix.
I would love if we could do more of this sort of thing in the writing group. Pick an issue. It might be something personal, it might be something from the news, it might be a historical interest. Don't be constrained by reality in the setting, but bring as many truths as you can (on one wee stage) to the issue.
