The Girl is a song from the musical production of Only Fools and Horses.
It's a poignant piece about how a young woman's dreams fare against real life.
But I saw it as, possibly, a series of short, sharp character sketches .
Start with, Did you hear about the girl / boy / woman / man, or anything in-between, and describe them in the following three lines.
Work around a the general format of 7 syllables, 6 syllables, 7 syllables, and 6 syllables. But don't worry too much about that.
Try to have the second and fourth lines rhyme.
If possible have a twist in the fourth line.
If you need a little more space, try using two verses, where the second undoes the first.
This is less a poetry exercise that it is a way of compiling a list of interesting characters.
The lyrics are -
THE GIRL
From Only Fools and Horses
– The Musical
Did you hear about the girl
Who had it all worked out
Knew exactly what she wanted
Never had a doubt
Did you hear about the girl
Who lived by her own rules
She grabbed life by the... throat
And didn’t suffer fools
Did you hear about the girl
Who lived out all her dreams
Of spotlights on Broadway
scenes on silver screens
And a star, she was someone
Not just another face
On the road to fame and fortune
At last she’d found her place
She’s stylish, delightful
IQ of one-four-three
Brassy, but classy
I wish that girl was me
Did you hear about the girl
Who married Mr Right
A semi in the suburbs
A Volvo in the drive
Happy ever after
She thought this must be it
pity Mr Right
Was just another git
She’s charming, disarming,
Tasteful to a T
Gracious, tenacious
I wish that girl was me
Did you hear about the girl
Whose nose was not quite straight
Says she’s thirty-two
More like thirty-eight
A pimple on her forehead
With crows-feet round her eyes
Cracking bit of cleavage
But too much on the thighs
Did you hear about the girl
Did you hear about the girl
Did you hear about the girl
Whose head was full of dreams
