Breakfast at our B&B was spread across two rooms. Julie and I ended up in a room set for four lots of guests.

At our table was... well... us! The narrator and his wife.

At the second table, were Mum and Dad and two under-fives. The mother was explaining how bank-loans and credit-ratings worked to them.

At the third table were two men who might have been father and son. Neither wore a wedding ring. Their conversation was about the most mundane things, like how Aldi was really good but you had to be careful with brands you didn’t know.

At the fourth table were a man and woman who looked to be in their sixties. As they came in, she said to him, “Here we are, love. This is as far as we need to go. We don’t need to go any further. This is where we were going to.” He said, “This is where we were going to.” When they sat down, she said, “We can take our masks off now, love. We only need to wear them when we are moving about. It’s for our own safety in the end.” He said, “It’s for our own safety in the end.”

Now, the tables were close enough for the guests to talk to each other. How would you have that conversation go?

Or swap out one of our real-life breakfasters for characters of your own creation.
